Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband [also], and he praises her: "Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all." Proverbs 31:28-29 On August 101, 1877, Amanda McFarland became the first and only white woman to go to the mission field at Fort Wrangell, Alaska, a lawless town beset by enslavement of the natives and the widespread practice of witchcraft. Widowed a few years previously, McFarland also dealt with her own health issues and a complete lack of salary. Through it all, though, she won the respect and trust of both the local Indians and whites, raising support to build a boarding school, protecting the children in her care, and earning the title of “Alaska’s Courageous Missionary.” There are few things more remarkable than a woman sold out to Jesus Christ. Whatever other qualities you could seek in a wife that should top your list. You can trust that, throughout the various seasons of your life together, she will be faithful to do what’s right in God’s eyes. That provides a spiritual barometer for you, a partner and sounding board for the tough decisions and situations you will face together. She will blossom under the shelter of your sacrificial love, and the two of you will create a true masterpiece—a unified life under God. If you’re single, pray for such a woman; if you’ve already got one, let her know what a blessing she is.
