POSITIVE THINKING
“The mind grows by what it feeds on.”
—J. G. Holland
Norman Vincent Peale is the founder of the “Positive Thinking” movement. His book The Power of Positive Thinking has sold millions of copies. The bases of Peale’s theory are principles found in the Bible. First, you must believe in yourself; you must have a healthy respect for your own worth as a child of God. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Next, you must use your mind to tap into the power offered in the scripture. “You are given the mind of Christ.” Then, you must be in touch with the power of prayer for guidance and inspiration. You must expect the best. “All things are possible to him who believes.” Personal problems can limit your capabilities, so you must learn to rise above defeat, depression, and thinking that limits your potential.
Peale admits to being caught with his positive thinking down. When Guideposts magazine was in its infancy, it quickly ran out of capital, and Peale’s board sat in a meeting ready to kill the project. Tessie Durlack, a member of the board, chided the other members for their lack of faith and vision. She had them pray “thanks” for new subscribers and for the ideas to make the magazine a bigger success than they had ever believed possible. The exciting change of attitude that took place saved Guideposts, which is now one of the most widely read publications in the world.
CONSIDER THIS: Positive thinking is a way to focus your mind on your goal, with the belief that you will obtain it. Do you believe? Do you reinforce that belief daily with some exercise of positive thinking?
