I sometimes was invited to participate in panel discussions on national, secular television. We were to “discuss religious questions.” One day an intellectual atheist confronted me. He was a great debater and thought he knew it all. When the discussion began I was dismayed.
The atheist and the moderator began to speak about horse-racing, a subject I knew nothing about. The atheist was in his element. He knew the names of many horses and jockeys by heart and said, “I have put my money on such-and-such a horse.” At that moment the Holy Spirit quickened me, and I said, “Mister, now I would like to tell you something about horses. I have put all my money on the white horse in the book of Revelation!”
The atheist was baffled and repeated to himself, “White horse in the book of Revelation?” It seems to have been the only horse this horse expert had never heard of. Then he said, “Tell me preacher, who is the rider of that horse?” It sounded to me as if he wanted to know the name of the jockey. He couldn’t have asked a better question.
“Revelation chapter 19 tells us that the name of the rider is Faithful and True, it is the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of kings and the Lord of lords,” I replied. “I want to be honest with you,” I continued. “I didn’t put money on Him, because I have no money. But I put my life and soul on Him, and I know that I am going to win!”
This is where the race begins for God’s people, with the absolute certainty that we are on the winning side. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “Take heart! I have overcome the world” (niv).
