How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? Psalm 94:4

The Bible has its fair share of leading characters who let arrogance bring them to personal ruin. Moses killed a man, David committed adultery, and Paul sought to harm the very people Jesus came to rescue. Each man acted as if God’s law didn’t apply to him. They justified each decision because it was intended to lead to a desired outcome.

Pride and false humility are two sides of the same coin. One side wants to be noticed and the other wants to be noticed by saying they don’t want to be noticed. Both shine a light on self. When Jesus points you toward true life, you should expect Him to do two things. The first is to teach you that who you are is all about who He is and what He’s done. Nothing you can do changes who you are to God (see Ephesians 2:9). The second is that when you take credit for something God has done through you, it will be the only credit you receive (see Matthew 6:5).

Arrogance is the source of the downfall of men because it replaces God’s perfection with man’s misguided intentions, and the resulting self-worship is something others don’t want to observe. God led Moses, David, and Paul through arrogance to a humble acceptance of the true source of their success. He can do the same for you.
