He said to them, Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, [a]and to God the things that are God’s. Luke 20:25 AMPC

Each payday, do you smile or wince? Smile at what you took home? Or wince at how much was deducted for taxes? The latter was the default in ancient Roman times, so much so that Jesus was asked if He was for or against paying taxes to the emperor.

It’s important to remember that this question was extremely controversial, highly volatile, and even life-threatening.

If you’re for paying taxes, the Jews will riot instantly.

If you’re against paying taxes, the Romans will arrest you just as fast.

So, Jesus, which way is it?

His disciples were deeply divided on this question, at least until they heard His answer. And what an answer it was! After all, Jesus wasn’t relying on mere human knowledge and ingenuity. Instead, as God’s Son, He proclaimed the inspired, divine, steadfast wisdom and ways of God.

Are you willing to see your paycheck in the light of what the Lord Jesus Christ said and did? If so, how does that change the way you see it?

Prayer: Unshakable God, may I take what Jesus said to heart now and always. The government that makes money demands some of it back. But You, Lord, own everything.

May all believers consider not cheating on their taxes and God be willing, elect a President that pays his taxes in setting the example for the rest of us, but even if that does not happen, may He help us to pay our taxes in following Him.

And may He lead us to help our fellow man that is about to perish from the elements and/or starvation in these latter days with the provision He has provided us in loving our neighbors as ourselves as He has commanded without failing to provide for our own house first, including those that are widows in distress.
