Our High Priest

Heb 7:14; For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
Heb 7:15; And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek,
Heb 7:16; who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life.

In the old testament, priests were supposed to be from the tribe of Levi. Yet there was Melchizedek who wasn't a Levite. Why is this significant? Because Jesus wasn't a Levite either, but He is a priest.

Heb 8:3; For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.
Heb 8:4; Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law;

When a priest goes to intercede for you, He takes an offering or sacrifice with Him to appease God.
The priest can't come before God empty handed. So what did Jesus offer? (more about that shortly)

It says if Jesus was on the earth today, He couldn't be a priest. Why? The biggest reason is the temple in Jerusalem is gone. There is no place for the priests to do sacrifices currently. But there is a place in heaven.

Heb 8:5; who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, "SEE," He says, "THAT YOU MAKE all things ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN."

When God told Moses how to make the tabernacle, it was a copy of.. shadow of something in heaven.
Moses had to make it to exacting standards. It was a copy of the tabernacle in heaven.

Heb 8:6; But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.

Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant. Part of the reason He can be is because he understands our weaknesses.

Heb 5:2; he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness;

Priests in the Old testament were men who sinned themselves. Because of this they understood how to deal with some people.

Jesus didn't sin... but He was tempted... because of this Jesus can understand our weaknesses.

Heb 2:18; For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

Heb 4:15; For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

So what was the sacrifice Jesus gave to the Father on our behalf? What does He bring to the altar in heaven?

Heb 9:11; But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;
Heb 9:12; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Heb 9:13; For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh,
Heb 9:14; how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

For these three reasons. He is our perfect high priest.

1. He never sinned.
2. He understands our weaknesses
3. He gave "the blood of the lamb" as a perfect sacrifice.

Heb 5:9; And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
HEy BAC do you know how Jesus became the high priest of MELCHIZEDEK. ?

If I remember correctly you can only inherit this position, that is why his earthly father had to die so Jesus could inherit this position if Joseph never died Jesus could not have gotten this position . That is why is Jesus is our high priest forever because he will never die.

Jesus could not become a Leviticus priest because you had to be from the levi tribe, Jesus came from the Judha tribe. Melchizedek is the highest order.. We are all in the Melchizedek order under Jesus as our high priest. This is how the new covenant of grace came to be and over rides the old Law.
