God promised salvation to the mankind right in the garden of Eden. From the time when God promised the SEED OF THE WOMAN that shall bruise the serpent's head (Genesis 3:15), Satan made numerous attempts to prevent the birth of the promised seed, inspite of all that, God proved how faithful He is towards us.
1. Satan thought the SEED would come from Abel and instilled enmity between him and Cain and got him killed. But God gave more sons and daughters to Adam. (At that time Satan did not know from whom the Promised Seed is going to come).
2. Sons of God (fallen angels) married daughters of men (unnatural relation) and tried to corrupt the whole mankind to prevent the birth of the HOLY ONE. This even moved God to destroy the mankind from the face of the earth. But Noah was found faithful in the eyes of God and was spared from the destruction. God started all over again with Noah.
3. God promised Abraham that the Seed is going to come from him (Genesis 17:7). Satan would have doubtless laughed at Sarah's barrenness and God waited till Sarah was PAST AGE. Technically Sarah cannot conceive at that age, but God did a miracle for them and gave Isac and made mockery of Satan's plans. And God promised Abraham that the seed would be through Isaac. Probably Satan would have moved God to test Abraham (like he did in Job's case) and God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. But God intervened when He saw Abraham's faith.
4. Rebekah was barren and Isaac prayed for her (Genesis 25:21).
5. And when the twins (Esau and Jacob) were grown up, Satan stirred enmity between them hoping Cain & Abel's tragedy would be repeated. But God protected Jacob from the hands of Esau.
6. At the time of Moses' birth, Pharaoh commanded that all MALE children of Israel be killed (again doubtless at Satan's instigation). "But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive" (Exodus 1:17) .
7. Satan tempted King David and made him commit adultery. And he was guilty of murder as well. According to the law of Moses, he was to be stoned to death. But God applied the New Testament rule and FORGAVE David when he cried unto the Lord (read Psalm 51), for the Saviour is to come from David's line. David did not offer any sin offering nor burnt offering for his sins (Psalms 51:16). It was purely God's grace and David's repentance that brought forgiveness.
8. After King Jehoshaphat died, his son Jehoram slew all his brethren with the sword (2. Chron. 21:13) there by reducing the ROYAL SEED down to ONE MAN (Jehoram). Jehoram comitted evil in the sight of God, "Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, BECAUSE OF THE COVENANT that he had made with David, and as he PROMISED TO GIVE A LIGHT TO HIM and to his sons for ever" (2 Chronicles 21:5-7).
9. Then Arabians slew all the children of Jehoram save Ahaziah the youngest (2 Chronicles 22:1).
10. "Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah... DESTROYED ALL THE SEED ROYAL of the house of Judah. But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber" (2 Chronicles 22:10-11) . This limited the ROYAL SEED to one life, Joash. For 6 years, all the hopes of God's people were rested on this one INFANT and the LORD protected the Child and brought him to power at the age of 6.
11. Haman tried to destroy ALL the Jews (Esther 3:8-9) but one sleepless night of the King changed the things.
And FINALLY the Child was born! Israel could say, "unto us a CHILD IS BORN, unto us a SON IS GIVEN" (Isaiah 9:6).
Satan tried even after His birth to prevent Him from buying the redemption for the mankind by His blood. He got Herod to kill all children below 2 years, Satan tempted even our Lord that He cast Himself down from the pinnacle of the temple (Luke 4:3). We all know how the Lord refuted Satan's attempts. His own people "thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, THAT THEY MIGHT CAST HIM DOWN HEADLONG" (Luke 4:29). Finally when the Lord was crucified, Satan failed to understand that it was his defeat until the Lord rose again, because "it was not possible that he should be holden of" death (Acts 2:24).
And now our resurrected Lord "is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them" (Heb 7:24)
All the while, God showed Satan how powerful He is, and demonstrated His faithfulness towards us. What a blessed Lord we have!!!
God bless!
