When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? Psalm 8:3-4

When is the last time you felt awe-inspired by the sheer beauty of a sunset? By the magnitude and majesty of the night sky? By the ocean’s relentless lapping waves? By the immense grandeur of the Grand Canyon or Rockies or Mississippi or Great Lakes or Appalachians?

Those awe-inspired feelings of transcendence can provoke a number of mixed emotions, including exhilaration, thankfulness, and worship—and also including fear, insignificance, and overwhelmedness.

Thankfully, the psalmist David can relate to many such feelings.

First, David is excited how much creation magnifies the Lord’s fame. If God crafted the universe by merely speaking the word, then there is no limit to His greatness!

Second, David is thrilled how God can use anything for His glory, honor, and praise. Even little children!

Third, David is humbled by God’s special place for mankind here on earth and later in heaven (and still later in the new heavens and earth).

Every man experiences moments of transcendence, when “awe-inspired” becomes reality. Men will fly, drive, and walk long distances in search of them.

After such moments, where does your heart turn? King David shows the way.

Prayer: Lord, transform me. When I stand outside at night, overwhelm me with thanksgiving to You.
