Old Testament Kingdom Prophecies. Literally or spiritually understood?

Daniel said the Kingdom of God would appear during the times of the ancient Roman Empire. And Jesus confirmed this. He preached the Kingdom was at hand. It already had been suffering violence. And that he casting out demons was proof it arrived. But he threw a huge curveball to everyone by saying so.

“And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:2 (KJV 1900)

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” Matthew 11:12 (KJV 1900)

“But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.” Luke 11:20 (KJV 1900)

Everyone expected a literal physical kingdom similar to David’s that would rid the land of the Romans and do all the Old Testament prophets said it would do.

But here’s what happened. Jesus continued preaching the gospel of the Kingdom describing it as present, invisible, and also as spiritual. A kingdom only the born again could see. Later he said his kingdom is not of this world and comes not with observation. And that the kingdom is within you.

In contrast, the Pharisees taught a literal physical millennial kingdom based on a literal interpretation of Old Testament Kingdom Prophecies. So naturally, they rejected Jesus’ gospel of the kingdom in favor of theirs. Also many followers looking for a physical millennial kingdom did too, even today. The disciples did not understand the nature of the kingdom still questioning its whereabouts leading up to Pentecost until Peter preached the same gospel of the kingdom Jesus preached.

And so, here’s where the split begins. Do we side with Jesus, Peter and Daniel, thinking the kingdom came, and it is spiritual? Or do we side with the Pharisees and other millennialists thinking Jesus, Peter and Daniel were wrong? Because the physical kingdom described by the prophets didn’t show when it was supposed to?

Since Jesus preached the gospel of the present spiritual kingdom, it means this. If Jesus and Daniel were right, all the Old Testament Kingdom Prophecies were symbols of the spiritual Kingdom, not to be taken literally. And the kingdom came on time during the ancient Roman Empire and we have been living in it ever since.

“And when thy days [David] be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.” 2 Samuel 7:12–13 (KJV 1900)


So Jesus would rule from David’s Throne in heaven while David remains dead and buried. That is before the resurrection on the last day. That is now. While we wait for our resurrection, the resurrection of David and all believers on earth’s last day.

Jesus is Ezekiel’s Temple if you look at it this way. God’s Temple made without hands. Only God can build Ezekiel’s Temple because of its incomplete measurements. You would need to add to God’s word in order to build it with human hands. Also, because it calls for a return to animal sacrifices, if taken literally, it would involve you in unforgivable sin according to Hebrews 6. An unforgivable return to animal sacrifices.

Jesus is Ezekiel’s Temple, the Temple made without hands, along with the Church in whom God dwells.

The Kingdom is God's Kingdom, He is the Originator and the Designer of it, and it will be only by His almighty power that it will come to fruition as a glorious fact. The kingdom of God is a present reality, as shown in such Scriptures as 1 Chronicles 29:11; Psalms 103:19:-

'Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power,
and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty:
for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine;
Thine is the kingdom, O LORD,
and Thou art exalted as Head above all.'
(1 Chronicles 29:11)

' The LORD hath prepared His throne in the heavens;
and His kingdom ruleth over all.'
(Psalms 103:19)

* In the Lord's prayer we have the words, 'Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in Heaven.' The Kingdom of God has yet to be established in the earth, as it is in Heaven. Within the purpose of God it was necessary for the Lord Jesus Christ to righteously eliminate sin and death from creation so that the kingdom of God, which is a reality in heaven may become manifest over the whole creation which includes the earth.

* At the present time we have sin, death and open rebellion against God as far as the earth is concerned and these must be removed before that glorious time envisaged by the prophets comes to pass, when 'the knowledge of God shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea' (Habakkuk 2:14), when war will be removed and universal peace take its place, 'when nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more' (Micah 4:1-4).

* The kingdom of God is both material and spiritual. It is enjoyed now by those who have come to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord, in spirit (spiritually), but ultimately it will be a reality on the earth as it is now in heaven.

* Regarding the prophecies of the Old Testament, I believe they should be taken literally.

A lot of the times, in the Bible, you will see words like "as" or "like".

Rev 1:14; His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.
Rev 1:15; His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.

These are sometimes spiritual metaphors, but sometimes they are simply descriptions of what something was "like".
Perhaps above Jesus's feet weren't actually bronze, but they were "like" bronze.

In contrast, physical things are never "like" something, they are what they are.
For example...

Rev 21:12; It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.
Rev 21:13; There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west.
Rev 21:14; And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Rev 21:15; The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall.
Rev 21:16; The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal.
Rev 21:17; And he measured its wall, seventy-two yards, according to human measurements, which are also angelic measurements.
Rev 21:18; The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.
Rev 21:19; The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald;
Rev 21:20; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.
Rev 21:21; And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

These aren't spiritual metaphors, this is a physical place, with physical dimensions, and actual physical materials.
For example the gates aren't "like" pearls, they actually are pearl. The foundation stones aren't "like" jasper, sapphire and emeralds, they actually are these stones.
There are a couple of sentences above where the gold is "like" transparent glass, but the fact is, it's still gold.
Spiritual metaphors in the BIble never have dimensions, like inches or feet, but this city has physical dimensions.
