Nothing to Do
READ: 2 Thessalonians 3
2 Thessalonians 3:14 (ESV) “If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.”
When was the last time you heard a preacher talk about this verse? In most churches, verses like these aren’t considered “preachable” because they might offend, upset, or cause people to question their walk with Jesus Christ. Not only does Paul refuse to hold back on his beloved brothers and sisters, but he is very firm that the church should have “nothing to do” with a person who disobeys the words of his commands
Is Paul arrogant? I mean, who is he that he would ever think he has the right to call someone out like that!
Friend, if the above two sentences are the silent objections in your mind, you have been duped. Your view of biblical truth has become jaded by culture and self!
This is still God’s word for His people today. Today’s topic verse doesn’t stand alone. Notice:
Romans 16:17 “I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.”
1 Corinthians 5:11 “But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler--not even to eat with such a one.”
It isn’t the aim of this short devotion to go into all the practical situations these verses imply. However, it is a warning to know what the Bible teaches about church discipline (Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 5, etc.). Study it for yourself, and, above all, be discerning of all your relationships that have the name “Christ” attached to them..
Faith Lesson:
Proverbs 13:20 “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
In Christ,
Darin Smith
