"whom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, "saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods to go before us; [as for] this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' Acts 7:39-40 NKJV
Today’s scripture passage includes some astonishing information about the Israelites who had left their lives of slavery in Egypt under the God-ordained leadership of Moses. It says that in their hearts, they turned back to Egypt and wanted Aaron to make them gods who would go before them.
Many Bible scholars believe that the Israelites didn’t literally want to go back to the land of Egypt but instead wanted to resume the idolatrous practices of the Egyptians—practices God wanted them to leave behind as they began their journey to the Promised Land.
God had miraculously freed the Israelites from slavery and from idolatry, yet their hearts were inclined to return to bondage. That’s a temptation many Christian men still face to this day.
The Bible teaches that those who don’t know Jesus are enslaved to sin, but the apostle Paul wrote, “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness” (Romans 6:18). That means God has set you free. So don’t go back to your own personal Egypt—in your heart or with your body.
Prayer: Gracious Father, You have freed me from my former life of bondage to sin. There’s no turning back for me!
