Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw [it], they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." Exodus 20:18-19 NKJV
The Israelites were in the wilderness and at the beginning of a new journey with God. But they weren’t far enough away from their life of slavery in Egypt. The idea of coming to God boldly wasn’t an easy transition for those with the mind of a slave and the heart of a sinner.
It’s possible you’ve read of God’s power. You know He created the world and everything in it. He sets up kingdoms and removes kings from power. The thought of coming to Him can leave you looking up the definition for the word timid. It could send you running to find a dark corner in which to hide. It could bring you to the place where you understand God’s holiness and your impurity. But it’s in this place of personal instability that you can meet the unshakable God. He strengthens your spiritual spine and invites you to walk with Him and never hide.
Prayer: God, may I seek to hear from You and not run when You speak. Help me be unshakable in Your presence and fearless in the mission You have for me.
