I'm not really sure if this is the correct place for this but anyways!
I once heard that the devil cannot know what we are thinking unless we say it out loud so I was just wondering if anyone can help me out with this one.
Some scriptural backings will really help too.

So " Can the devil read our thoughts or can he not?"

...........................

The devil cannot read our thoughts. Reason being he is a finite being, he is limited in the things which he can do. Ps. 8:5 tells us that God made man a little lower than the angels. Men and angels too, are created beings. God made them in the beginning

God alone is infinite, ulimited, vast. God is the Infinite Being. God alone knows the thoughts and intents of the heart of men.

The bible has a lot to say about the spirit of men.

One such scriptue ........

"The spirit of man is the candle of the LOrd, searching all the inward parts of his inmost being" Prov. 20: 27

God uses the spirit of man as a light to search out the inward parts and determine what is good or bad. The spirit is that which knows the mind, the seat of the will, and conscience.

By searching, using the spirit of man, God can bring to light what is in him.
Psalm 139: 23. Jer, 17: 10. 1 Cor. 2: 10 Rev. 2:23

God alone can do this.

It seems to be a common idea among Christians to blame the devil for their thought life, and thus the words or actions produced by their thoughts, but the Scripture does not agree with this belief at all.

What this idea amounts to is a feeble attempt to transfer blame - if we are not the one to blame, we are not really responsible, therefore can not be held accountable...

Just to elaborate on what Stephen said...

Jer 17:9 The heart is a twisted thing, not to be searched out by man: who is able to have knowledge of it?
Jer 17:10 I the Lord am the searcher of the heart, the tester of the thoughts, so that I may give to every man the reward of his ways, in keeping with the fruit of his doings...
Jer 17:14 Make me well, O Lord, and I will be well; be my saviour, and I will be safe: for you are my hope.

Mat 12:33 "To have good fruit you must have a healthy tree; if you have a poor tree, you will have bad fruit. A tree is known by the kind of fruit it bears.
Mat 12:34 You snakes---how can you say good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Mat 12:35 A good person brings good things out of a treasure of good things; a bad person brings bad things out of a treasure of bad things.

Luk 6:45 A good person brings good out of the treasure of good things in his heart; a bad person brings bad out of his treasure of bad things. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

2Co 4:6 The God who said, "Out of darkness the light shall shine!" is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts, to bring us the knowledge of God's glory shining in the face of Christ.
2Co 4:7 Yet we who have this spiritual treasure are like common clay pots, in order to show that the supreme power belongs to God, not to us.

My guess would be yes, but have no scriptural proof. But this much I do know....I know he operates on our minds. That is His battlefield. That is where the attacks come. He is the accuser of the brethren. I do not think he sits in front of God day and night telling God how bad Bobby is and what a miserable Christian Sue is, but I can vouch for this much. He whispers it to us, doesn't he?But you know what? He is far more insidious than we have given him credit for. Why? Because when he whispers how bad we are in our ear, how we will never amount to anything in the kingdom of God, how we will never be holy or walk victoriously, he does it by whispering the word "I".... and in our voice, and more often then not, we buy it. The result? Instead of holding up the shield of faith of who we are in Christ, victorious, more than conquorers, free indeed, new creatures, pleasing children of God, we lower our shields, our ONLY weapon of defense that can quench the fiery dart of Satan, and instead we accept the condemnation as from our hearts.* The effect is multiplied ten fold.

Personally I do not think he can read minds and know thoughts but I believe he can have a good idea how folks will react after thousands of years of experience deceiving them.
