Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there stabbed him in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother. 2 Samuel 3:27 NKJV

The devotional for March 1 and March 21 talked about the six cities of refuge. Hebron was one of those cities. In such cities, someone could not be slain by a blood avenger without a trial. Unlike King David, Joab had no use for God’s law and violated it in every turn this day.

In the Unites States, someone who dies may not be buried for days or even weeks. In most of the world now and down through the ages, a dead body is buried right away, typically in the same place where the person dies. That was the case after Abner’s death. You can still see his tomb today not far from the Cave of the Patriarchs. The tomb is featured in the writings of many visitors down through the centuries.

David wept at the grave of Abner, leading the rest of the people to do the same. Instead of saying “How the mighty have fallen” in battle, David lamented the treacherous way Abner was slain in a city of refuge.

Prayer: Lord, You want me to recoil at Joab’s treachery. May I never be guilty of high-handed disregard for You and Your Word.
