unlike Moses, [who] put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the [veil] is taken away in Christ. 2 Corinthians 3:13-14 NKJV

First-century religious leaders found it difficult to transition from the old covenant to the new—even though the new was incomparably better.

Like Moses, who continued to wear a protective veil even after the glory of God’s presence faded from his face, people find it difficult to move on. Things like reputation, accomplishments, and position can dull the good news of the Gospel.

Isaiah prophesied that the new covenant would cause people to say, “The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2).

Although Isaiah and the religious leaders knew that the old way of multiple sacrifices and human effort would be replaced by Jesus’ sacrifice and effort, they still found it difficult to move away from what they had grown comfortable with. Do you?

Just as the “veil” could be removed “only in Christ,” only Jesus can help you move beyond trusting in your own reputation, accomplishments, and position to trusting the One who is close to “all who call on him in truth” (Psalm 145:18)

Prayer: Father, help me to move away from trusting in my own efforts.
