At the command of the LORD the people of Israel set out, and at the command of the LORD they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. Even when the cloud continued over the tabernacle many days, the people of Israel kept the charge of the LORD and did not set out. Numbers 9:18-19 ESV

Israel recognized that they would only experience God’s guidance, blessing, and protection if they resolved to only move with the cloud. Even though they longed to venture into the promised land, they had to entrust themselves to God’s direction for their lives.

When is it hard for you to wait on God’s timing? Have you ever felt that you’ve rushed ahead without God’s guidance, provision, or protection? It can be humbling to admit that you don’t know what’s best for yourself. However, the story of Israel may provide the reminder that it’s far worse if you move forward without God’s power and leadership. If you try to move forward without God’s transforming presence in your life, then you may have difficult days ahead.

Perhaps a time of waiting for the Lord looks like seeking the counsel of someone at church or relinquishing your desires for a particular outcome in your life. The delay may be agonizing, but God’s presence is worth waiting for.

Prayer: Lord, I trust that You will show me when to move forward and that Your timing is perfect.
