In Luke 24 verse 46, Jesus says it was written that He would die then rise from death on the third day.

Can anyone refer me to the precise Old Testament prophecy please, is it in Isaiah?

Psalms 16:10 refers to God not letting "Thine Holy One see corruption" and repeated in Acts 2:27 " Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither will thou suffer thine Holy
One to see corruption."

Widely accepted that the bodies internal organs begin to decompose on the 3rd to 5th day after death. "See corruption" refers to His flesh not decomposing.

Just a small sample of scripture references to the third day or three days - way too many references to post them all.
Jonah 1:17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Matthew 12:40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Exodus 8:27 We must go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as he tells us.

Joshua 1:10 And Joshua commanded the officers of the people,
11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”

Hosea 6:1 “Come, let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.

2Kings 20:5 “Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you.
On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD,

1Samuel 30:11 They found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. And they gave him bread and he ate. They gave him water to drink,
12 and they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. And when he had eaten, his spirit revived, for he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.

Esther 4:15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai,
16 “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though
it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”

Matt 20:19
mar 10:34
Luke 18:33
Luke 24:7

Maybe these will help.

He died on the day prior to the begining of the Sabbath and was alive again on the first day of the week. Can be found in John 19 and 20

Hello rstrats hope you are well...

I see what you are driving at. Because there were no New Covenant writings at the time (except possibly Matthew), what does this passage mean? Well I believe the "according to the scriptures" comment refers to His rising and not to how many days or on which day He would rise. These additional passages other have shared support that He would rise, but you are correct, they do not specifically mention "on the third day" or its possible variations.

Actually, my comment was poorly worded as to its point which was that the Old Testament verses that Waggles posted don't make any prophesy with regard to a coming messiah which is what Christina2000 was asking for.

Okay! Sorry....I know it was C-2000's op

Well, let's see:

re: "Jonah 1:17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."

Where do you see a prophesy being made here that the Messiah would rise on the third day?

re: "Jonah 1:17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."
Where do you see a prophesy being made here that the Messiah would rise on the third day?
Jesus himself referred to Jonah as a sign concerning himself -
Matthew 12:39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
12:40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

If you do not see prophecy in OT scripture concerning three days and three nights and also on the third day - then that is your prerogative to fail to understand;
but I clearly see prophecy pointing to the Messiah would rise on the third day?

In Luke 24 verse 46, Jesus says it was written that He would die then rise from death on the third day.
Can anyone refer me to the precise Old Testament prophecy please, is it in Isaiah?
There is no specific verse in OT scripture that teaches directly that the Messiah would die and be raised up on the third day.
However both Jesus and Paul referred to such prophecy as being written-
Luke 24:45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

1Cor 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

So where is it written - it is alluded to and referred indirectly to in the OT theme of three days and three nights along with many references to the third day.
For example,
Hosea 6:1 “Come, let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
6:2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.

Clearly Paul the apostle and Jesus read such scripture in the OT as alluding to and describing Jesus' resurrection after three days and three nights in the tomb and be raised on the third day.

Luke 13:31 In that very hour certain Pharisees came, saying to him, Get thee out, and go hence: for Herod wishes to kill thee.
13:32 And he said to them, Go and say to that fox, Lo, I cast out demons and accomplish healings today and tomorrow, and the third day I am perfected.
Here is a way of saying things similar to OT verses.

John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2:2 and Jesus also was bidden, and his disciples, to the marriage.

Acts 27:18 And as we laboured exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw overboard;
27:19 and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship. [and were saved]

Just a reminder that our Earth is also the third planet - the only one with water and life.

In Luke 24 verse 46, Jesus says it was written that He would die then rise from
death on the third day. Can anyone refer me to the precise Old Testament prophecy
please, is it in Isaiah?

It's a grammatical trick of the eye. Watch as I revise the verse just a bit to show
what I mean.

"Thus it is written, and thus it is written for Christ to suffer and to rise from the
dead the third day:"

Although Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms all speak of Christ as he said in vs 44,
nobody in the Old Testament speaks of his resurrection relative to a third day.

Are you satisfied with the Old Testament references provided by Waggles?
