Matthew 16:19 ESV

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Just looking to gain some understanding about this verse from those more scholarly about the Bible than I am.

I'm not necessarily more scholarly than you, but I think there is quite a bit located here.

The Roman Catholic church tried to steal those keys a long time ago, but they don't belong to them. Derek Prince has a decent teaching on this somewhere, if you want something scholarly. He was quite scholarly and often broke down the Greek into simple understandable terms.

There's a lot of different teachings regarding this scripture. I'm sure many are quite nonsense. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say as well.

Blessings!

"Keys" refer to "authority". When Jesus said....
The "rock" in which Jesus will build his Church is the revelation that Jesus Christ is Lord, which Peter just confessed. All those who become a child of God are given this authority.

Luke 10:19.. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

During the church age, Jesus gives authority to the true believers who have the Holy Spirit. Satan does not have authority over the Holy Spirit but rather the opposite is true. The verse is primarily about belief and non-belief (salvation). When Satan is bound for a thousand years (not a literal thousand years but parable language for the time of the church age) he cannot stop the Holy Spirit from giving people belief in Jesus. Rev 20 talks about that church age time: "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season." (Rev 20:2-3). The seal which was put on Satan during the church age was the Holy Spirit preventing Satan from DECEIVING. In other words, the Holy Spirit was loosing people from the lies of Satan to believe in Jesus unto salvation and Satan could not stop this. The gates of hell were not prevailing, but belief was prevailing unto salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, the true believers were loosing people as the gospel went forth and this salvation was of heaven. If the Holy Spirit was not freeing someone unto salvation, that person was still unsaved (bound) because they had not believed the gospel as it went forth. After the church age, there is a little season called 'great tribulation' during which Satan is allowed to deceive the congregations and people no longer believe unto salvation in that arena generally (there is silence in heaven because people are not converting to Christ in truth, so no rejoicing in heaven because no one is being saved in the congregations). During the tribulation period, we are told to flee to Christ in our hearts, not to 'religious congregations' (Luke 21, Matthew 24).

Thanks for the answers. Hearing other's breakdown of scripture is always helpful.

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven
God / the Bible says we will have a resurrected body just like Jesus and that we will share in all of Jesus inheritance. If that is not handing over the keys, I don't know what is?
whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
This has to be looked at spiritually and the fact that the verse was addressed to the Apostles and about there holy work on earth , so nothing bad or sinful here; the binding and loosening means, to the best of my knowledge, it means what ever you allow on earth and forbid on earth will be allowed in heaven and forbidden in heaven.
