I know that there is much confusion about exactly what Blasphemy of, (or against), the Holy Spirit really is. Hopefully, with God's help, I can shed some light on this subject.
This sin, (also known as the Unforgivable Sin), is mentioned in Matthew 12:31-32.
"And so I tell you, every sin & blasphemy will be forgiven men; but blasphemy against the Spirit, will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age, or in the age to come." (NIV)
To get a better idea of exactly what Jesus is talking about, I think the best example can be found a few verses earlier in verse 24-
"But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, 'It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." (NIV)
Is it just me, or is this circular logic? Jesus had just cured a man who was blind & mute, possibly because of his being demon possessed. Jesus goes on to explain how a house divided against itself cannot stand, (VS 25), showing that even Hell would collapse, if it turned against itself! Satan would become compleatly ineffective! (WOULDN'T WE LIKE TO SEE THIS HAPPEN! BILL )
The leaders were in reality saying that Jesus cast out the demon, by the spirit of the prince of demons. Well, we have numerous examples of how Jesus was in the Spirit, filled with the Holy Spirit, did miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit-Luke 4:1, 10:21, among others. Well, that is saying the Holy Spirit is pure evil! It goes against everything that the Bible says God is! It is denying the very souce of God's power, through which Jesus DID His miracles-the power of the Holy Spirit!
That is what the "Unforgivable Sin" is, my Brothers & Sisters! It is attributing the Works of God, to the devil, rather than admitting that they really ARE from God!
I also like in this passage something Jesus also says. Look at the first half of verse verse 31:
And so I tell you, every sin & blasphemy will be forgiven men, ......"
And again in Verse 32:
"Any who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, .......
What do we see here? EVERY SIN CAN BE FORGIVEN!!!!!!!!! Praise God-EVERY SIN!!!!!!!! Is there anyone who thinks that they have commited a sin that they CAN'T be forgiven? That lie is shot down right here! There is no sin, that cannot be forgiven, no matter HOW BAD we think that it might be!
Talk about sins! Before I came back to the Lord, on 1/11/03, after 25+ years of being away from Him, even though I had practically been cursing Him 24/7-HE FORGAVE ME EVEN FOR THAT!!!!!!!!! Anyone still think that God can't forgive them?
Also notice that Jesus says virtually the same thing twice! All throughout Scripture, whenever God says the same thing twice-that means that you can DEFINATLY take that to the bank, because He is re-affirming a truth, by saying it twice!
How can we REALLY know is we have or haven't committed the "Unforgivable Sin"?
My Beloved Brothers & Sisters in Christ: if you are being convicted of a sin-you HAVEN'T committed the "Unforgivable Sin"! That is the Holy Spirit working in you! If you had comitted it, do you think that you would be as convicted? No. You wouldn't care, because Holy Spirit WOULDN'T be convicting you.
The Pharisees didn't care. None of the Jewish rulers cared. The Romans didn't care. If any of them had, they never WOULD NEVER have crucified Jesus!
As long as we are continually being convicted every time we sin, it is simply God's way of letting us know how much He DOES LOVE US! A good father disciplines his children BECAUSE he loves them! In the same way, our Heavenly Father, disciplines us when we mess up-as a way of showing all of us, (& you had better believe that I include myself here! Bill), that He wants us to come to Him & to restore that fellowship that was broken BECAUSE of that sin! THAT is true love!
Let us pray.
"Heavenly Father: we praise Your Name all the time for Your convicting us of ANYTHING that stands between us! You are doing it, to let us know how much we still have to grow in You, & when we HAVE done wrong in Your eyes! We thank-you beyond all measure for the gift of Your Son & our Lord & Savior, Christ Jesus-the one who died, so that we may be restored to the true fellowship with You, that You intended for us since before the world began! How truly wonderful Your Name is above all else! May we never be angry, when we feel You hand of correction upon each of us. May we rejoice because of it, because it does show that You DO love us! Help all of us to continually walk in Your light, & to spread Your Word, that Jesus DOES indeed live, & that NO sin is above being forgiven! We ask this in the Name of the only way to You. We ask this in Jesus Name!
In Jesus Name!
