Matt 25:31-46 - The Judgment of Gentile Nations

Active
Hello there

Matt 25:31-46 is not a resurrection of individuals. The subject is the judgment of Gentile nations who will be living at the time of the Lord's return to earth.

'When the Son of man shall come in His glory,
and all the holy angels with Him,
then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory:
And before Him shall be gathered all nations:
and He shall separate them one from another,
as a shepherd divideth his sheep from his goats:
And He shall set the sheep on His right hand,
but the goats on the left.
(Matt 25:31-33)

* Israel is not included in this judgment because the nation of Israel will once again be His chosen nation and therefore will not be reckoned among the Gentile nations. Also, the basis of this judgment is how each of these nations have treated Israel.

'And the King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you,
Inasmuch as ye have done it
unto the least of THESE MY BRETHREN,
ye have done it to Me.'
(Matt 25:40)

* The righteous nations who trust in Him and are friends to Israel will have part in the inheritance of the millennial kingdom. (Matt 25:34) "Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world"

* Those nations who have been enemies of Israel will be ruled with a rod of iron. This will fulfill the prophecy of Psalms 2:8-12.

'I will gather all nations,
and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat,
and will plead with them there for My People and for My heritage Israel,
whom they have scattered among the nations,
and parted My land ...
Let the heathen be wakened,
and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat:
for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe:
come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow;
for their wickedness is great.'
(Joel 3:2...12-13) [read through to 21]

'...and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward His servants,
and His indignation upon His enemies.
For, behold, the Lord will come with fire,
and with His chariots like a whirlwind,
to render His anger with fury,
and His rebuke with flames of fire.
For by fire and by His sword will the Lord plead with all flesh:
and the slain of the Lord shall be many.'
9Isaiah 66:14-16)

* Compare Isaiah 66 with Matthew 25:46. "Everlasting punishment" is death.

'And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword,
that with it He should smite the nations:
and He shall rule them with a rod of iron:
and He treadeth the winepress
of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.'
(Rev 19:15)

* This is not the great white throne of judgment. This is punishment meted out upon the enemies of Israel.

Verse 32 says "all" the nations. This isn't about Israel vs the world. It's simply a judgment for everyone in the world, Jewish or not.
There is no reference to Israel or the sons of Israel anywhere in this passage. No particular nation is singled out in this passage at all.

* This is not the great white throne of judgment.
Perhaps not.... but even so.

Matt 25:34; “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Matt 25:41; “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
Matt 25:46; “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

It appears the eternal sentencing is being given to these two groups of people right here.

Hello @B-A-C,

Thank you for your response.

Matthew 25: 31, the opening words enlighten us at when this will take place, 'for the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, THEN shall He sit upon the throne of His glory.' He will judge the nations. We are also told, in verses 35-46, what they will be judged concerning, '... 'Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have DID IT UNTO one of the least of these MY BRETHREN, ye have done it unto me' (v.40) and, 'Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye DID IT NOT to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.' (v.45). Yes, they will be judged according to how they have treated the Lord's brethren. * Who are the Lord's brethren in this context? Is it not His own countrymen, who as Priests unto God have been ministering among the nations following their repentance and acknowledgement of the Lord Jesus Christ as their Messiah and King at that time.

* And yes, sentence is passed accordingly, as you say.

Thank you

Interesting you say this is before the 1,000 rule of Christ,, I often wonder if it before or after the 1,000 rule

Let me ask you, does the below verse talk about the lake of fire??

41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

I agree 100% ,,but I am not clear on some other scripture when compared to this, love to get your thoughts

Beleivers do not come into judgement

John 5-24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.
He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Hello @Dave M,

Thank you for responding. Yes, it is difficult to pin everything down I agree. :)

The wording of, Matthew 35:31-46, appears to confirm that this judgment takes place before the millennial reign: because those nations who show kindness to Christ's brethren inherit that kingdom, (v.34), whereas those nations who treat His brethren unkindly will be ruled with a rod of iron during that time. Yet, as you are pointing out, verse 41, refers to, 'the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels,' which I associate with the period following the 1,000 year reign of the Overcomers with Christ. The quotation, from Joel 3:2 & 12-13, Isaiah 66:14-16 and Revelation 19:5, in the OP, pins it down more clearly: and though the lake of fire comes into prominence following the 1000 year reign of the overcomer with Christ; and following the second of the two resurrections mentioned in Revelation 20:5; and the white throne judgement (v 11); it has to have been in place during that whole period.

Thank you
