A woman told me if a man and woman stay together (trust, love each other) that they don't need a marriage license. She said her christian friend show her some scriptures to prove it. I told her to show me, while I find scriptures to show we need to have a license. She said in the Old Testament it doesn't say anyone had a certificate of marriage. Any feed back?:omg:

Ricky, We are to obey the laws of the Land and within that there is a Marriage Lisence. God put authority over us through the Law and we are to follow it...even speeding...

I hope they are not just trying to justify "living together". I suspect one or both parties are trying to avoid having to make a commitment. I would ask why they don't want to make their relationship legal.

Whereas the Bible doesn't speak specifically of a marriage license, there were marriage ceremonies (like the wedding Jesus attended when he turned the water into wine) and marriage was officially recognized and the marriage arrangement was legally binding.

In this country the marriage license is important because it solidifies the marriage commitment by making it legally binding. It also protects the interest of both by giving them rights to the marriage assets.

Living in obedience to God and the laws of the land is the right thing to do.

It is true that a marriage license was developed as a law of the land for two people who choose to live together, and Romans 13:2 reads, "So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow."

On a more personal note, I am a woman who lived with a man for quite some time. During that time, I sought out God and longed to be closer to Him. To be closer to God, you worship Him and show your love for Him by obeying Him. I realized I was not obeying God so long as I was living with someone without a marriage license, so I prayed about the situation, and the opportunity then became available for us to obtain the marriage license and by doing so we were then living in obedience to man's laws, which meant we were also living in obedience to God's laws.

After I prayed about the situation, the man I was living with suddenly wanted the marriage license as much as I did, and everything fell into place. The finances, the church, the preacher, all became readily available. The marriage ceremony was a pleasant one that took little preparation, and now I feel as though a weight has been lifted off from me.

The reason why you are having to ask the question as to whether or not it is okay to live with someone without a marriage license is because you are caught in a spiritual battle. As long as you want to hear that it is okay to do so then the Evil One will make sure there is somebody around telling you what you want to hear. The reason why you can't just believe and accept those lies is because deep down, the Holy Spirit is telling you different. Once you give in to the Holy Spirit and live in obedience to God, the guilt and the doubts you are having will all float away and you will be much happier.

Sin and all the pain and trouble that comes along with it is a consequence we live with when we do not obey God. Do you and your loved one a favor: Live in obedience to God by obtaining a marriage license. God gives us these laws because He loves us and doesn't want to see us suffer the consequences from not obeying them. Pray, and tell God that you want to obey Him, and He will help you find the ways that will make it easier for you to do so.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. Marriage is an honorable institution though it is established by God we must acknowledge our obediance to God before men by obtaining the "piece of Paper" that states we are "married" remembering that a "wedding" is not a marriage but a marriage is developed over time. The wedding shows the world our obediance to God. A marriage shows God our obediance to Him. many wed but are not truely "married'.

No one that comes in here is "stupid" the Bible says "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom"...by coming here seeking you show your wisdom never again cal yourself "stupid" if you lack knowledge it is always available to those that seek it.

surely we have all heard it been said....'to live in sin' means
to be living together without being married, so that alone
proves it, it is sin to live together without being married.
Now does this only apply to Christians don't non-Christians
do it anyway because they don't live by God's holy law?
What do you think?

Hi,

I wasn't the one who ask the question. A young lady ask me. I think there was more behind what she was asking. I think she was trying to get a relationship with me. I AM Married and I wasn't studing her. But she did get me to reseach the question so that I could give her a Godly answer. All of the brothers and sisters who responded help me to let her know that it is a sin. I hope and pray she understands. She was in the church but has back slided. Pray for her and those who are in that situation and know better.

I can't say were I heard it from Reba sorry
It's just something that's always been known
even by unbelievers....
I often heard it said 'they're living in sin'
and you just know what they are meaning
is that they are not married, I assumed everyone
knew that. seems not.

Great Maureen.
Let's let pop culture and heresay become doctrine. Please back up your statements that have "always been known."
Someone help me understand why its important that a marriage be recognized by the State if the couple's consciences are clear before God?. If a State Recognized marriage truly is a legal contract, isn't it the couple's perogative if they want to forego the "blessing" of the state? What are the "common law marriage" laws? If a man and woman leave their father and mother, cleave to one another, and become one flesh, how does a document issued by the State make that commitment more real?
Here's another head spinner for you, and this is just for conversation, why can I not, according to the Bible, have 2 or more wives?
