Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. Ecclesiastes 12:13

In AD 1646-1647, a group of English and Scottish theologians and laymen got together to write a famous document called the Westminister Shorter Catechism. It was written in question-answer format, opening with the following:

Q1: “What is the chief end of man?”

A1: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”

This exact phrase doesn’t appear anywhere in the Bible, but the message can be drawn from today’s scripture verse. Solomon had written at length about the meaningless of life, but in the end (the very last two verses of Ecclesiastes) he states that every man’s purpose can be summed up like this: “Fear God and keep his commandments.”

As a man of God, you never have to wonder why God made you or why He saved you. You never have to allow yourself to wonder why you’re here. God has made you to love Him, to live for Him, and to be the man He’s created you to be.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for creating me for these specific purposes: to love You, to honor You, and to live my life in a way that pleases You. May I pursue those purposes wholeheartedly.
