Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king"; and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 1 Kings 1:5 NKJV

Poor King David. When he got older, his rebellious and proud son Absalom said, “I will be king,” and usurped the throne for mere days. Then, when King David was very old, his next son born after Absalom said the same thing in today’s key verse. His plot lasted only a day or two. As soon as King David heard of it, he installed Bathsheba’s son Solomon as king and seated him on the royal throne. What a day of rejoicing…except for those party to Adonijah’s plot!

Like Absalom, and like Adonijah, who doesn’t want to be king? Some want to be king of their own lives. Some others want to be a prince or king at their church or workplace. Still others want to be a leader in their community, city, county, or state. And it doesn’t stop there.

To declare himself to be king. However, means a man has rejected the Lord God as his Maker, Lord, and King (1 Samuel 8:7, 10:19, and 12:12). Such a self-determined, egotistical, and proud man actually doesn’t care what God thinks. May that never be true of you.

Prayer: Lord, You set up one and put down another. It’s all in Your hands. That includes me.
