"But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Luke 6:27-28
Have you ever thought about where humanity would be if God had looked down on sinful, lost people and just said, “Fine! They hate Me, they curse My Name, and live lives that offend Me in every way. I’m through with them!”
The bible teaches that you were once God’s enemy (Romans 5:10), that you were alienated from Him and hostile toward Him (Colossians 1:21). But it also teaches that while you were still a sinner, Jesus, God’s only Son, died for you so that you could be reconciled to Him.
God is the perfect example of Jesus’ command to love your enemies and to do good to those who hate you. He tells you to love your enemies, just like He did when He sent Jesus to die for you. And He tells you to do good for those who hate you and curse you, just like He did. But more than telling you to do those things, He showed you what that kind of love and blessing really looks like.
It’s not easy to love and bless those who don’t reciprocate. But when you do just that, you give those who dislike you and mistreat you a much-needed glimpse of what God’s love is really all about.
