"Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished." Luke 20:46-27 NLT
In the days of Jesus on earth, the Sadducees and other Jewish religious leaders controlled the judicial system, which barred women from bringing a case to court. When a woman’s husband died, therefore, she couldn’t do anything to protect her family’s property from being seized “legally.” How wicked. Jesus condemned these religious scam artists in no uncertain terms (today’s passage and Mark 12:38-40).
Today’s New Testament reading, Luke 20:27-47, takes place in the crucible of Jerusalem only three days before Jesus lays down His life. To say the least, the Sadducees had no love for the Lord. They also felt repulsed by the common people. Proof? Their favorite joke made a mockery of childless widows. Again, how wicked.
Do you love widows? If so, which particular widow(s)?
Prayer: Omniscient Lord, You want unshakable men to love widows. Which widow can I show love to today?
