We often hear God is love. ( 1 Jn 4:8; )
We often hear God loves everyone. But the Bible says God hated Esau.
( Malachi 1:3; Rom 9:13; ) The word used here is miseo in the New testament.
miseo - to hate, to detest (wane in the old testament Hebrew).
It may be that God hates some people, or it may be that Esau was a lone exception.
Regardless of that, this post isn't really about Esau.
We often hear God loves us no matter what. He even loves sinners. ( Rom 5:8; )
Just because God loves someone, doesn't mean they are saved.
A popular passage that is quoted quite often is Romans 8:35-39; It asks the questions...
what can separate us from the love of Christ?
Eph 2:4; talks about Gods great love for us.
Eph 3:19; talks about the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge and understanding.
But it seems something separated Esau from God's love. ( Heb 12:14-17; )
Love works two ways... it is given and it is received. In the case of Jesus... He gives it
to us even when He doesn't receive it from us. Yet we are told we should God/Jesus
several places in the Bible. ( John 8:42; John 14:23; etc... )
A lot of the promises that Jesus/God gives us... seem to depend on whether we love Him or not.
The popular Romans 8:28; (one of my favorites) is for those "who love God".. and are called according
to His purpose.
In order for God to know us... we need to love Him. ( 1 Cor 8:3; )
The Bible says we can't love God unless we love our brothers. If we say we do, we are liars.
( 1 Jn 3:10; 1 jn 3:17; 1 Jn 4:20; etc.. )
Jesus said if we want to continue (abide) in His love, we need to keep the commandments.
John 15:10;
Jesus said if we keep the commandments (and love Jesus) we will be loved by the Father. John 14:21;
It may be that Jesus loved Judas when he betrayed him.
It may be that Jesus loved the Pharisees when he called them a brood of vipers ( Matt 12:34; )
It may be that Jesus loved them when He called them sons of hell. ( Matt 23:15; )
But just because He may have loved them, doesn't mean they were saved.
