Proverbs 12:1-3,5,13,15,17,22 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
1Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates correction is stupid.
2The good man obtains favor from the LORD,
but the LORD condemns a man who devises evil.
3A man cannot be established through wickedness,
but the righteous cannot be uprooted.
5The plans of the righteous are just,
but the counsel of the wicked leads to deceit.
13An evil man is trapped by his rebellious speech,
but a righteous man escapes from trouble.
15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
but a wise man listens to counsel.
17He who speaks the truth declares what is right,
but a false witness speaks deceit.
22Lying lips are detestable to the LORD,
but those who deal faithfully are His delight.
They Hate Correction
A long time ago, when my grandchildren were still very young, I got into a discussion with the two oldest who disapproved of me using the word “stupid,” for they were taught that it was a bad word. Well, it can be, depending upon how it is being used. Like we should not call each other stupid as an insult, like “you stupid idiot!” But “stupid” is a legitimate word which can be used rightfully in the correct context. For it means senseless, foolish, i.e. speaking of actions which are unwise, thoughtless, imprudent.
Therefore, those who hate (reject, dislike) correction are those whose actions are unwise, undisciplined, and irresponsible. They are those who make their own way in life, do what pleases themselves, often without thought or consideration as to who might be impacted by their actions and decisions. They will often reject good and godly counsel and choose their own way, instead, out of pride, but it will often not go well for them. For they keep landing in the same deep pit over and over again. So, not good!
Because they despise correction and discipline, they often end up being those who devise evil, who revel in wickedness, and whose counsel, in matters of conduct, leads to deceit. So they go it alone, doing things their way, which is not God’s way, out of stubbornness, rebellion, conceit, and perhaps out of bitterness of heart and mind. And for many of them, it isn’t that they don’t know the right way, the way of righteousness, holiness, and godly discipline, but that they love their sins more, and so sin rules them.
They Love Discipline
Now, the word “discipline” does not have to mean only harsh punishment for doing something wrong. It also means self-control, self-restraint, obedience, and orderly conduct. And it has to do with resisting the devil and fleeing temptation and drawing near to God in submission to His will and purpose for our lives. For, by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, we deny self, die to sin daily, and follow our Lord in obedience to His commands, in life practice. We do this in the power of God because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us on that cross.
We who are following the Lord Jesus with our lives, whose lives are surrendered to the Lord, to doing His will His way, have the mind of Christ leading and guiding us in the way that we should go. We listen to the counsel of the Lord, and we choose obedience over stubborn rebellion. We choose righteousness over sinfulness. And this does not make us perfect, but it means we are not going it our way but God’s way and we are following the Lord and not the flesh. For we are those who heed God’s counsel.
Then, the words which we speak, they should be truthful, to the best of our understanding. We should not be those who lie and who deceive, but we should be those who stand on the Word of God for our counsel and correction and who walk in the ways of the Lord and in His counsel. Especially if we are those who publicly are declaring the truths of the Scriptures, we should be diligent to make certain that what we are sharing as truth is what the Scriptures teach so that we don’t lead others astray.

I have loved you with an eternal love,
Which I give to you, in my faithfulness.
Keep your voice from weeping,
And your eyes from tearing.
You will be rewarded
With much fruitfulness.
There is hope for you that My family
Will return to Me; live in victory!
Though I discipline in My love for you,
My heart longs for you that you walk in truth.
Turn your thoughts to your Lord.
Choose to walk in His ways.
Turn from your sins daily.
Follow Jesus Christ.
Oh, how long will you wander in your sin?
Give your hearts to Me; be restored within.
I will satisfy ev’ry weary soul
Who repents of sin; is renewed within.
Behold, days are coming;
It will surely happen;
Though I discipline them,
They will thrive again.
I will be their One and their Only God.
They shall walk in white; be in Me, made right.
