Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Proverbs 13:11 ESV
In 1988 William “Bud” Post III bought a lottery ticket and won $16.2 million. He told newspapers he had less than three dollars in his bank account at the time.
In the first few months, Bud blew through his winnings in a series of sibling-related business expenditures and extravagant purchases—including a twin-engine plane, even though he lacked the pilot’s license needed to fly it.
Before long, Bud was estranged from his family and fighting in court over claims against his fortune. In spite of his winnings, Bud soon found himself in debt. Then, after he fired a gun over a debt collector’s head, he found himself in jail.
“Everybody dreams of winning money, but nobody realizes the nightmares that come out of the woodwork, or the problems,” he once said.
The lottery isn’t a good way to make money, not only because so few people actually win, but because people who play are not likely to make wise decisions with the money if they do.
The key to money management is the willingness to earn money by honest work and the commitment to use it as God intended—giving generously to others as God has generously provided for you. Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33).
Prayer: God, make me wise with my finances.
