After Moses made sure the Israelites understood who they were because of whose they were (Deut. 7-8), he then spent the next several chapters encouraging them to look up and renew their covenant commitment to the Lord (Deut. 9-14). Because they were a chosen people of God, His treasured possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, they needed to renew their heartfelt commitment to the Lord. Why? Because the Lord was leading them to a land that was not only filled with blessings, it was also a land that was filled with all kinds of pagan people. People who were so repulsive to the Lord that He literally wanted to vomit them out of the land (see Lev. 18:24-28).

Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ Know therefore today that it is the Lord your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you. (Deuteronomy 9:1-3 NASB)

èIn chapter 9 we see that the people of God were to look up and renew their commitment to the Lord when it came to right thinking before the Lord. In other words, they needed to be very clear when it came to their understanding as to why God was going to bless them. True, God was going to give the Israelites victory in the Promised Land, but He wanted them to recognize that He was going to do this, not because of them, but in spite of them. God was going to bring judgment because of the wickedness of the pagan people, not because of the righteousness of the Israelites. He was going to settle all accounts, vomiting them out of the land as He had promised, not because of the goodness of the Israelites but because of the wickedness of the pagan people in the land. The Israelites needed to be clear on this and not think they were going to have victory because of how good they were. That’s why Moses reminded them of their wicked ways along the road to the Promised Land, including their personal pagan “disco dance party” around the golden calf years earlier! Christian, is there a practical principal from chapter 9 that you could learn from and use in your life right now? Is there any area where you need to look up and renew your commitment to the Lord when it comes to right thinking?

èIn chapters 10-11 we see that the Israelites needed to look up and renew their commitment to the Lord when it came to a right attitude towards the word of the Lord. God in His grace had provided a written record of His commandments (not once but twice!), and the people needed to recognize how truly blessed they were. In fact, they were the only nation who had been given God’s word of truth (see Psalm 147:19-20). They needed to have reverent respect and honor for the Lord; they needed to have humble love for the Lord; and they needed to understand that this would come as they studied and obeyed the word of the Lord. Christian, is there a practical principal from chapters 10-11 that you could learn from and use in your life right now? Is there any area where you need to look up and renew your commitment to the Lord when it comes to a right attitude?

èIn chapters 12-14 we see that the Israelites needed to look up and renew their commitment to the Lord when it came to a right heart for worship of the Lord. They were to worship the Lord in the manner and place prescribed by the Lord. They were to worship the Lord and Him alone, forsaking all the false gods of the pagans in the Promised Land. And they were to worship the Lord in all their activities, including their eating, tithing and purity practices (see 1 Cor. 10:31). Christian, is there a practical principal from chapters 12-14 that you could learn from and use in your life right now? Is there any area where you need to look up and renew your commitment to the Lord when it comes to a right heart?

Today’s Prayer: Dear Lord, You are Perfect and Holy in every way. And You are truly worthy of all thanksgiving and praise. Please forgive me when I do not appreciate all that You have done for me. I want to truly be grateful for all the blessings you have provided, are providing, and will provide. In Jesus Name, Amen.
