Todays Devotional - Called

He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. Matthew 10:1

I admire doctors. I respect their experience and the extensive training they’ve undertaken. GPs have been authorised to practice and have the weight of the NHS behind them. They are mere human beings, but the fact they’re qualified makes all the difference: people trust them and mostly benefit from their care. I’m just amused they always ask, ‘How are you?’ when you visit them. It’s tempting to reply, ‘Sick actually, otherwise I wouldn’t be here!’

Jesus came to heal and save a sick world. Today’s verse follows an introduction to the disciples’ mission (9:37-38). They’d been following and learning from their Teacher’s wisdom. Others had tagged along too, but the ‘Twelve’ were among those who’d made a whole-hearted response. They were to be their Master’s special representatives and ‘twelve’ was reminiscent of the Old Testament tribes of Israel. Jesus said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers ...’ (9:37-38) They must’ve asked and landed themselves with the job! Despite their lack of experience, the Lord sets about restoring Israel through them - qualifying and authorising them.

How is the world today? Many would reply, ‘Sick actually, and in need of help’. Jesus makes His diagnosis and has the cure. Despite our inadequacy, He is calling US to work for Him with the power of His Spirit within us. It’s not what we know, but who!

A Prayer for today.

Thank You, Lord, that those You call, You also equip.
Amen.
