For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not [use] liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13

Once a year, Americans commemorate a day set aside to honor and express gratitude to those who have served in the United States’ armed forces. You honor those who serve because they do so to protect your freedoms.

Those freedoms—and the United States Constitution protects many for citizens of this land—include the freedom to plan your own course in life and the freedom to worship and serve God as you see fit. For protecting those freedoms, you should most certainly be grateful to the brave men and women in uniform---and to your God, who has declared you free through what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross, and who has called you to live in that freedom.

The parallels between the freedom you enjoy as an American and the freedom you enjoy as a child of God are there for those who take the time to look at both. First of all, both freedoms were earned and are protected through the work of others, not your own. Secondly, neither freedom gives you the opportunity to do whatever you want regardless of how your actions affect others.

Jesus has made you free, and you are free indeed. Are you using that freedom to love and serve others?
