But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to [fulfill its] lusts. Romans 13:14

You’re told to “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ, which sounds similar to putting on a change of clothing—and that’s exactly what the scripture means. In Luke 24:49, Jesus told His disciples, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised (the Holy Spirit); but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Spirit of Christ is like a force field that clothes you; you step into Him and He envelops and surrounds you. Paul explained, “You have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in…the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:9-10).

Your “new self” is empowered by God’s Spirit, enabling you to live victoriously in this fallen world. That’s why scripture warns not to look for ways to indulge your fleshly appetites. You’re a new person, so yield to God’s Spirit dwelling inside you, not your old sinful habits.

The Bible commands, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6). When you first became a Christian, you knew that living as a believer would entail resisting old temptations and living according to Jesus’ teachings. And this is still true.
