When I'm done organizing my notes I'll share today's message with those who missed the sermon.

My notes from today's teaching on Loyalty. I can't get it word for word, but this is the best summary I can provide. May you be blessed as I am.

2 samuel1:23-27
23Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

24Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

26I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished

Proverbs 20:6
King James Version (KJV)
6Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

What is loy·al·ty  ?

1.
the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations.
2.
faithful adherence to a sovereign, government, leader, cause, etc.
3.
an example or instance of faithfulness, adherence, or the like: a man with fierce loyalties.

In 2 samuel 1:23 David gives us a detail description of his relationship with Jonathan. He was loyal to David in many ways, in friendship and in acceptance of David's appointment to be King. In our lives can do people see us as loyal or do we change our minds when times get tough. Do we take our commitments and vows to others and God seriously?

In today's teachings Pastor Carter Conlon forces us to ask these questions.

Am I a loyal person ?
Can my word be trusted ?
Am I a man/woman of my word ?
When it becomes unpleasing do I still do it ?
Better or Worse do we remain loyal ?
Have I been faithful to people over me ?
Are you a loyal friend?

We represent the bible, for many we are the bible in our workplace , home and school. The world looks at us, at our actions and our ability to do as we say and what the bibles calls us to do.

Can you be trusted ?
Are we loyal to one another ?

When you proclaim to be of one body and to love each other, do you mean it ? When you have dinner at your house does it show your acceptance and love of people of different backgrounds. ( do you invite people of s different race for dinner ) Do you hug people at the church you won't invite to your house in fear of what others might say ? When you go to a restaurant does the environment or location you choose is it of certain type of people ? Do you claim to not be racist yet never invited those same token friends ( the first thing when accused of being racist one would say " I have a black/white friend, or colleague from work," never inviting them to a family gathering, church gathering work gathering in fear of losing elite status.

psalm 55
12For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

13But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

14We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

15Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

The greatest hurt is one from a christian , our brothers and sisters.
Are we loyal to one another ?

Joshua 24:15
New International Version (NIV)
15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Our promises to God must be real.

2 Corinthians
5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?

Loyal people inspire others to be loyal and faithful.
1 samuel 14:6-13
6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”

7 “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

The armor bearer had to trust and have faith in Jonathan to follow his orders. If you're a respected person people will follow and have no problem being loyal to you.

So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel.”

13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

....................................................

Are you able to be loyal to those appointed over you?
Are you loyal to truth ?

When Jonathan heard his father wanted David dead , his natural response could have been " yes now the throne is mine," but it wasn't. He was upset with his father.

1 Samuel 20
30Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

31For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

32And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

33And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

If someone with less experience was appointed over you, would you be loyal to them ? Or would you quit and leave ?
Proverbs 20:6
King James Version (KJV)
6Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

Loyal people do not run away
Loyal people do what is right.

In our society leaders, politicians and pastors are no longer being held accountable for broken promises or wrong doings. They are allowed to say one thing and do another. We have dropped our moral compass. People get married and no longer honor the vows they made " for better or worse."
They run, stay and are never held accountable for not doing the right thing. Being disloyal is seen as human nature, a natural flaw.

Jonathan is a good example of a loyal person. Paster Carter in staring his sermon said he never understood why Jonathan did not reject his father and follow David. But instead entered a suicide mission. Jonathan was following the commandment " Honor thy Father ." To the end he was faithful and loyal to his father who was King.

David said "25How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places."

Paster Carter stated the Church spiritual temperature is no higher than the world. In our daily lives how do people see us, when we are gone what would the world say. Do we honor those in positions we know we deserve and qualify for ? Are we willing to accept the positions God set up for his Church?

Now ask yourself
Are you loyal to your friends ?
Are you loyal to your marriage ?
Are you loyal at the workplace ?
Are you loyal to your family ?
Are you loyal to the vows you made to God ?
Are you loyal to what God wants you to do ?
Can God use us?
Will we be content to give up the identity we want for what God wants for us ?

You don't have to worry about doing this in your own strength. His holy Spirit will strengthen you. For it's not my will but God's will be done. We ask God to give us grace to be loyal, for us to mean what we say and give no one room to say " she/he says one thing but we never know if they would do it."
