So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther commanded him. Ester 4:17
At the end of a daylong seminar on a biblical understanding of humility, two very elderly gentlemen asked to speak to the audience. The men had sat on opposite sides of the auditorium that day and hadn't conferred with each other. Yet what each said was haunting.
On the far left of the auditorium, the very elderly gentleman said, "I've been married to a very wise woman all these years. Why, oh why, didn't I listen to her?" In the back on the right side, an even more elderly gentleman said, "I'm so ashamed. I married a wonderful woman of God. I can't believe it. Why didn't I listen to her?"
Nothing said that day had addressed this topic, but God had spoken in no uncertain terms to each gentleman.
Scripture portrays Wisdom as a godly woman, exalts her throughout the book of Proverbs, and celebrates her good husband's attitude toward her (Proverbs 31:10-31). This includes listening to her, heeding her advice, praising her to others, and allowing her to make important financial decisions pertaining to her household, her business ventures, and her favorite charitable concerns.
So, it shouldn't surprise us that wise, learned, and older Mordecai--Ester's father figure--"did everything as Esther had ordered him."
Prayer: Lord, I want to be a strong, confident, and wise man who listens to the wisdom of the godly women in my life.
