The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, until there was no remedy. 2 Chronicles 36:15-16 ESV
God sent prophets to Judah who could help the people change their ways and find Him again. But they consistently chose to honor those who said what they wanted to hear rather than God’s prophets, who spoke hard truths. God’s prophets asked hard questions and challenged the status quo. Listening to the prophets was costly, challenging, and sometimes even put people at odds with each other. It was far easier to seek our false prophets giving the easy messages that reaffirmed what they already wanted to hear.
Is there anyone in your life right now who can speak a hard truth to you? A hard truth isn’t the same as criticism. Rather, you need someone who can speak truthfully to you about your choices and the consequences you will face. Those who speak truthfully to you will have your best interests in mind and will share their words as a burden from God, not out of a personal agenda for more power and control in your life.
Prayer: Lord, help me to listen to the hard truths I need to hear so that I can live in obedience to You.
