But Jesus said, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children." Matthew 19:14
In first-century Israel it was not unusual for parents to disown children. Parents could treat their children like property. Husbands could sell their wives. So when you read that Jesus said, "Let the children come to me," this was beyond revolutionary.
Jesus didn't view children as a substandard group. He even went so far as to say that children can be examples of what trust looks like. To Jesus, children weren't a nuisance. They were pictures of the way everyone should come to Him.
You might come to Jesus as a skeptic thinking He needs to prove Himself. But Jesus is building a kingdom on a foundation of love, enhanced by grace, and growing when people like you trust God like the child Jesus welcomed.
Jesus removed barriers for the forgotten, lost, and marginalized to come to Him. He warned those who thought differently to stay out of the way. If you think there are barriers keeping you from Jesus, please remember those obstacles are not put in place by the One who came to rescue you.
Prayer: Dear God, help me to look past the barriers I have erected and see Your invitation to forgiveness. May I come to You trusting Your answers are greater than my questions.
