[We are] hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; [we are] perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NKJV
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took the lives of 2,341 American service members. Almost half died on the battleship USS Arizona.
USS Arizona crew member Lauren Bruner recalled, “I and five others were located on the antiaircraft gun directors platform above the bridge when the forward powder magazine blew. All of us were badly burned. I was burned over 80% of my body. At that point, the only possibility to evacuate the ship was to dive in the water, which was 80 feet below and was fully engulfed in flame. That was not an option for survival.”
Moored next to the USS Arizona was the USS Vestal, a smaller repair ship. On board, crew member Joe George saw the trapped men and threw them a rope. In spite of their horrific burns, the men were able to shimmy across to safety.
Believer, this world is under attack just like the USS Arizona, but Jesus has seen you and thrown you a lifeline. Though in this world you will get burned, by God’s grace you shall not fall into the fiery depths below. Praise God for giving you the only option for survival!
Prayer: Lord, You are my lifeline in a world on fire. Keep me from despair, and use me to bring others to Your safety.
