Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. John 12:25-26 NLT
There is nothing in this life you can keep or take with you into eternity other than what springs from your love for God. Your obedience and selfless service to others demonstrates your faith in God and confidence in the life that’s to come.
Clinging to what you can gain for yourself today at the expense of your soul is a bad trade. The more you concentrate on accumulating in this world, and the more you worry about what you can possess or protect in this life, the less capacity you’ll have to hold on to what God cares about most.
Think of the things that can weigh you down or slow your steps toward God. Think of your attachments to this world—whether emotional, relational, or physical—that hold you back. They are burdens that keep you from the only prize that matters.
The more you surrender to God, the less you have to worry about defending. The more you’ve emptied from your life, the better prepared you are to receive what God wants to give you.
Prayer: Jesus, open my eyes to what holds me back from You.
