Learning Wisdom

Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days. Proverbs 19:20 NKJV

Guys often think that older men—the ones with the most gray hairs and lines on their faces—possess a measure of wisdom that younger men don’t have. That’s not a bad assumption, because older men have experienced much more life and have had much more wisdom imparted to them.

God wants every man to possess wisdom and understanding, and He uses different means to impart that wisdom. Thankfully, God will generously give wisdom to anyone who asks for it (James 1:5). That could easily be understood to mean that God supernaturally imparts wisdom and understanding so you can better understand His Word, as well as how to apply it to your daily life.

Today’s verse strongly suggests that God fulfills His promise to impart wisdom through two additional avenues: instruction and discipline. In other words, God doesn’t only supernaturally impart wisdom (though He does that through His Holy Spirit), but also teaches a man wisdom through the advice of others and through His discipline.

So ask God for wisdom, but understand that He’ll use different means to give it to you.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for so generously giving me wisdom when I ask for it. I am grateful for the instruction and discipline You use to impart Your wisdom to me.
