There were a group of sheep herders in England that were struggling with keeping their flocks in their fields. They were trying to build better fences and construct different ways of keeping them from getting away. I am not sure the circumstance of how these sheep herders ended up talking with an Australian rancher but somehow there was some reason for a consultation.
The Australian off handedly remarked that these English farmers were demonstrating what he called small island thinking. In Australia the concern is not with the fences but with having sufficient and plentiful water. This water keeps the sheep close by. Now I don’t mean to get into a discussion of ranching practices in England verses Australia but I find the image helpful to me in thinking about our life as a community of God’s people. May we stay close to the waters of life, God grant it amen.
