In all labor there is profit, But mere talk [leads] only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23

In the United States and Canada, Labor Day is celebrated as a public holiday on the first Monday in September. It honors the labor movement and all that workers have done to make their country strong and prosperous. There are frequently parades, festivals, and speeches; Labor Day is considered the end of summer, so it has also become known for back-to-school sales.

The Bible also celebrates laborers, noting that “in all labor there is profit” (Proverbs 14:23), and observing that “the sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much” (Ecclesiastes 5:12). Paul advises the believer, “Let him labor, working with his hands what is good” (Ephesians 4:28).

God has a special place in His heart for laborers. When working as a shepherd, the patriarch Jacob assured himself, “God has seen…the labor of my hands” (Genesis 31:42).

The Bible celebrated the first Labor Day—not merely once a year, but fifty-two times a year, every week faithfully! God proclaimed, “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work” (Exodus 20:9-10). Next time you enjoy a day of rest, remember that it shows the Lord’s love and care for you.
