John 8: 44 Helps To Clarify Revelation 13: 11 - "He Spake As A Dragon"

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon” Revelation 13:11

In the King James Version, when the Pharisees in John Chapter 8 were arguing with Christ, Christ said to them "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." John 8: 44

For some verses of the New Testament the New International Version tends to interpret the Greek rather than translate the Greek into English word for word using the best match of the meaning of English words to the Greek words as is done in the Tyndale, Geneva and King James New Testaments.
But for John 8: 44 in interpreting the Greek ek ton idion lalei as "he speaks his native language," the NIV may actually clarify the connection between Revelation 13: 11 and John 8: 44

"For John 8: 44 the NIV has:"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

And the New English Bible interprets the same Greek words in John 8: 44 as "he speaks according to his own nature." And it then says "because he is a liar and the father of lies."

"You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8: 44 in the New English Bible

The translations of John 8: 44 in the NIV and the New English Bible help explain that when the second beast of Revelation 13, the false prophet, representing the many false prophets of Matthew 24: 11,in speaking as a dragon, is giving a "spin" on what he says. So he uses a deceptive and manipulative way of speaking. Genesis 3: 1 says "Now, the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made." Of course, we know that this serpent who deceived Eve and led her away from obedience to God, was not just an animal of the field. He is the exact same creature as the dragon of Revelation 13: 11.

In Genesis 3: 2- 6, "And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3. But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat."

The serpent - the dragon - used deceptive and manipulative language to get Eve to disobey God and eat of the tree she was told not to eat of. Part of what the serpent told Eve was an outright lie, that Eve would not die if she ate of the tree, as God had told them would happen. So, the language of the dragon involves the use of lies mixed in with subtle, deceptive and manipulative speech.

In John 8: 32 Christ told the Pharisees that "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."The Pharisees answered Christ, saying "We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?".......Christ told them,." And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever." John 8: 33, 35

In saying to the Pharisees in John 8: 32 that they could know the truth and it would make them free, Christ was talking about making them free of the Old Covenant. See: Galatians 4: 24-25. But the Pharisees could not understand that Christ was changing Old Covenant Israel.

“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed heir heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent me shall be hid” Isaiah 29:13, 14.

The hearts of the Pharisees were far from God and they, men, taught their precepts to Old Covenant Israel at this time.

The Pharisees could not understand that Christ was changing Old Covenant Israel, and that their being Abraham's physical seed meant nothing in the New Covenant. So, they argued against the absolute truth of Christ. "We be Abraham's seed, " trying to argue with God, that the Old Covenant doctrine of the bloodline from Abraham through Isaac and Jacob was still in place.

And - as the dialogue moves along in John 8, it is clear that Christ is telling the Pharisees that they are operating under the spiritual power of the dragon (John 8: 44) and the devil was their father.

They could not hear Christ's words, which were God the Father’s words.. “And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God” John 8:45, 47.
