I was reading the bible when i cam across a verse that worried me. "Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh. (Romans 1:3) It appears to be stating that Jesus is of Davids seed. But i thought Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit? Please clarify.

Thanks

Born of flesh and Spirit (Mary + Holy Spirit), that in His death and resurrection, the dividing wall be broken down between God and man forever, through faith in Him. Our witness and testimony...His Word is True, amen.

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Ephesians 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,
15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace,
16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

God intercedes for the sake of man, amen...praise the Lord, for His mercies are everlasting :)

Jesus is both human and GOD at the same time = two natures (divine/human). He was both flesh and spirit at the same time. In regards to seed of David, this is the promised seed (Jesus Christ) in the family line (descendant) of David.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

Romans 1:1-7
The doctrine of which the apostle Paul wrote, set forth the fulfilment of the promises by the prophets. It spoke of the Son of God, even Jesus the Saviour, the promised Messiah, who came from David as to his human nature, but was also declared to be the Son of God, by the Divine power which raised him from the dead. The Christian profession does not consist in a notional knowledge or a bare assent, much less in perverse disputings, but in obedience. And all those, and those only, are brought to obedience of the faith, who are effectually called of Jesus Christ. Here is, 1. The privilege of Christians; they are beloved of God, and are members of that body which is beloved. 2. The duty of Christians; to be holy, hereunto are they called, called to be saints. These the apostle saluted, by wishing them grace to sanctify their souls, and peace to comfort their hearts, as springing from the free mercy of God, the reconciled Father of all believers, and coming to them through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus was indeed conceived immaculately through the Holy Spirit. But, his earthly legal father Joseph was a decendant of David. Therefore, Jesus was a decendant of David, also.

sorry about my previous post stating my confusion, but how can he be a decendent of david when he wasnt of josephs flesh?

He was legally Joseph's son.

SLE

If I'm not mistaken, Joseph was also a descendant (genealogy) of King David, so in a sense Jesus Christ was too (legally) as brother SLE clarified.

It is clearly shown i scripture in the Bible which is the whole truth. Also, there are several places where people called Jesus 'Son of David'.

Yes Chad you are correct.

Matthew 1:20
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

If you use biblegateway and type in a keyword search for Son of David, you will see lots of examples.

Below is the genealogy of Jesus.

Matthew 1
The Genealogy of Jesus
1 record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
2Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
7Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[a] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
Abiud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Eliud,
15Eliud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

God bless  :rainbow: :rose:

Can't find my notes :(

I've moved too many times to keep my paperwork in order but I used to have stuff like this referenced and cross referenced all over the place.

I've seen at least one scholarly work that put forth a pretty good argument that Mary the mother of Jesus was also believed to be a descendant of David.

(Keep in mind that David was 14 generations before Jesus, so for Mary and Joseph to both be his descendants and get married wouldn't be a problem at all).

So whether you take it by his stepfather Joseph as a purely "legal" thing, or by his birth Mother Mary as a matter of blood, Jesus would be a "son" of David.
