And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. Luke 2:52 ESV
A “montage” is a film technique where a series of clips are edited together, usually set to music, and used to show the passage of time or repetitive events in a digestible form. If the book of Luke were a film, Luke 2:52 would be shown as a montage.
Sandwiched between Jesus as a boy teaching his elders and John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus’ adult ministry, this verse might get lost in a daily reading, but it communicates a mind-boggling truth about Jesus.
As God in the flesh, Jesus had all of God’s abilities and powers at His disposal. Yet Luke 2:52 shows Him as fully human. Jesus grew up, gaining wisdom and stature and favor—like a normal guy.
If it was possible for Jesus-God incarnate—to grow in wisdom, you have no right to act like a know-it-all. If Jesus went through puberty and grew up physically like the rest of us, He understands humanity at its most awkward level. And if Jesus could grow in favor with God, being God Himself, you must never portray yourself to the world as having arrived spiritually.
Luke 2:52 shows how Jesus became more than He was, and He came to make you more too.
Prayer: Lord, help me grow in wisdom and favor by reading Your word and becoming like You.
