Gen. 32:28 the name Jacob was changed to Israel.

Why is it that from time to time in the scripture there is reference to both names?

What is therefore the difference between Jacob and Israel?

It is quite similar to Abram's name change to Abraham ( Gen 17:5 with Gen 35:10)

Jacob's name is Israel. So why is he still called Jacob?

What might be the reason for this back and forth?

Gen 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Gen 35:10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

Jacob means supplanter and is his name before his transformation.
Israel means one who contends with God, and is his new name after transformation.
At Peniel God changed Jacob's name, but Jacob himself was not a transformed man. That is, his nature did not match his new name. But at Bethel Jacob had the experience of his new name, this is why God calls him Israel again. The name given at Peniel could be seen as prophetic of who Jacob would become, and the name given at Bethel, is confirmation of the person that Jacob has become. Jacob can refer to his old state but Israel indicates his new state. Whichever name is used depends upon whether it is talking about him in his old state or his new state.

Christ also had two names indicating his two natures; Son of Man indicating his human nature, and Son of God indicating His Divine nature.

Peter had a similar transformation from Simon to Peter, and Matthew from Levi, and Saul changed name to Paul.
A new name indicates a new nature.
Christians also have a new name, from "self" to Christ (Gal 2:20).

At Peniel Jacob saw God. At Bethel (35:2) Jacob put away all the foreign gods and purified themselves, and changed their clothing and made an altar to God. The altar signifies Jacob's consecration to God as a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1-5).

The Christian has a Peniel experience and a Bethel experience. Peniel is when we see God, we believe in Him, we are justified, we have a new name, being identified with Christ, but we don't have a new nature at that time. So we need to put away all idols, purify ourselves, consecrate ourselves, change our clothing (put off the old man), and be transformed (Rom 12:2, Eph 4:22-24). This is our Bethel experience. Then our nature will match our name and identity as a child of God.

Jacob was indeed "supplanter", or the one who takes the place of another- this did not disqualify him in God's eyes as He sends His Love on those who want it, not on those who disdain it.
Israel is a prince who has power with God.
Jacob/ Israel was both.
Also, Jacob was often used in describing his posterity.

Supposedly some of us have been born again by the Spirit of God? IF that is so, why is it that we still ever sin at all? Why are we not more like Jesus always than we are?

This is just a quick run down from my point of view:

We are to choose moment by moment to walk like Him.

God created man in His image (Gen_1:26 ). He is tripartite (3 parts) Father, Son, Holy Spirit (Mat_28:19 ); we are (in His image) tripartite: spirit , soul (mind, will emotions, intellect), body.

When Adam sinned against God he was told the day he ate that fruit he would surely die (Gen_2:17 ). His body did not die that say, his mind (soul) did not die that day; he suffered spiritual death which kept him from communing with a Holy God.
When a man (or woman)is born again they receive a new a new spirit or inner man (Ezek 36:26) and are given a new incorruptible body at the resurrection (1Co_15:52 ) - it is our soul that needs saving (Heb_10:39 ) . We are commanded to be renewed in our minds or thought patterns (think like God, believe what He says over circumstance and etc) and to be renewed in the very spirit or life force of our thinking . God communes with us in our spirit (1Co 2:9 - 12) His temple (1Co_6:19) , as we believe the Word of God as truth our bodies follow what we think. So a man walking in communion with the Holy Spirit receives power and revelation in his inner man, becomes renewed in his thought process and his body walks in the sanctified walk he is called to.

Any area where we are not renewed in our mind we think like the world and this is contrary to God; Adam ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and was no longer dependent on God for his leading.
Any time we are not walking in union, communion, fellowship with, being ed of and empowered by the Holy Spirit (like Jesus in His earth walk) we are walking in the power of the flesh which is always contrary to God.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

All these things are a restoration of what was lost so long ago in that garden; walking in fellowship with God (Gen_3:8). Our fellowship is now with the Father, with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit.

1Jn 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
1Jn 1:4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Php 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

Our New creature. Our New spirit man is Perfect and holy just like our example our Lord Jesus Christ. Our old spirit is gone forever Nailed to His Cross.
Our flesh is still a sinner and bound to die and rot away .
But we still of the same thoughts of the old man [Old Spirit],That why our flesh mind needs renewed , Those bad thoughts need replaced with God living Words. The more they are replaced? The more we appear outwardly like our Lord JESUS.

That why we need to be careful what we let our flesh mind see and hear.

Living though our inward man , we will always appear like our Lord Jesus. All our problems are in our outward mind, it never perfected or without bad thoughts. That where satan is attacking us daily.

If he can control the flesh mind? he can control the flesh body and bring suffering and dearth too the person?

Born Again , Born of GOD , born of the Spirit and Born from above is all our New Beginning by God giving us a New Baby Spirit being.
We still dwell in the same old sin filled dying flesh body .

All those desires to serve and be closer to the Lord is All coming from our Heart [Our Spirit man] They are the deep thoughts we get .
Our New Spirit Cannot sin . It made in the perfect image of our LORD JESUS.
God started a Brand New Race of beings made like our Lord to rule under Him Forever more.

This is our Spirit man after Salvation.
2Co_5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Eph_2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

Eph_4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Col_3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

2Co_4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Rom_8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Our Spirit once Born of God perfect seed has eternal life and Cannot sin ever.

1Co_15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Eph_2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

He dwells in His new Child our Spirit . Our flesh is part of this planet and is Gone Forever more once we leave it . all those thoughts within it are gone Forever more and only those things we did out of pure Love is taken with our new mind to Heaven [New Jerusalem]

He has Brand new perfect bodies for our Spirit to dwell in forever more in New Jerusalem awaiting us to enter them . Nothing we see on this planet is eternal .

2Co_4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

He not going to gather the ashes or dirt or dust up and make anything. He Only creates something from Nothing or something that is already perfect. He Never uses old junk and makes it New perfect stuff.

Heb_11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

He is Creator !

It Only our new Creature that is Free of Sin. It the only part of our being that Cannot sin ,because it made 100% in His image. Adam was Created from the earth . We are Created from GOD SEED . That very different.

1Pe_1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1Jn_3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal_5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Amen. The real question is this: will we, moment by moment decide to walk in the Spirit (in union with, led by, and submitted to Him) or will we walk our own way which is always contrary to God. Just as Adam chose his own way over God's way and Word the flesh always seeks its own way; but its works good or bad are never more than filthy rags and unacceptable in His sight. The flesh is hopelessly corrupt and cannot produce more than dead religious works in an effort to feel good about itself. The Spirit working in and through the believer produces life.

Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom_8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom_8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom_8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom_8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Gal_6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Php_3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
