WORD OF THE DAY (— James 4:7 )
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
MEDITATE ON THIS ( SUBMIT DON'T SURRENDER)
As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, there will be times when we feel overwhelmed by the spiritual attacks
all around us. There will be times when we will feel like we are losing our peace, depleted in our joy, low on
patience, empty on hope, and pulled towards sin. In such times we may feel like giving up.
Surprisingly, giving up is exactly what we need to do. However we should think in terms of
submitting(submission) not surrendering.
Our verse of the day tells us to submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. Submission is when we give up trying
to solve the problems ourselves and draw closer to God and under His authority, guidance, and protection. When we submit, "self"
steps down from the throne and gives up control to the Holy Spirit, allowing Jesus to ascend to rule as the head of our life.
On the opposite end, surrendering is when we stop resisting evil(thoughts, behaviors, lifestyles) and allow
ourselves to follow the flesh, the devil, and the world. When we surrender we lose hope in the promises of God and
feel like our situation is too severe for God to fix or save us from.
Submission looks like pursuing righteousness, surrender looks like chasing the lust of the flesh. Submission looks like
drawing closer to God ( James 4:8), surrender looks like drawing closer to the ways of the world.
When times get hard and you feel like you need to give up, remember you are right; you do need to give up.
However remember to choose to give up control to Jesus by submitting instead of giving up control to the
devil by surrendering.
Thought for the Week
Submission is a voluntary act of the WILL to line up under another whereas surrender is
an act often forced due to fear and hopelessness. The difference between submission
and surrender is not about giving up, but who you turn to after you give up.
Turn to Christ.
Prayer for the week:
Dear God, thank you for being a God of everlasting and eternal love. Remind me that
when I feel like giving up, that is exactly what you want me to do. Please rush to my
aid in my time of need so that when I do make the choice to give up, I will be greeted
with your protection, your peace, and a reassurance of all your promises.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
