Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, For they [are] from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; According to Your mercy remember me, For Your goodness' sake, O LORD. Psalm 25:6-7 NKJV
Guilt and shame can become great burdens to bear, preventing people from seeking God or asking for His forgiveness. The psalms are filled with confessions of guilt and requests for God’s mercy, but the good news is that shame and guilt never have the last word. The writers of the psalms always returned to God’s mercy, patience, and forgiveness as their sources of hope. Even the failures of the past didn’t disqualify them from God’s love.
You may have memories of your past weighing you down today. Perhaps you carry a sense of shame over a personal failure, such as speaking harshly or irresponsibly, that left someone hurt and wounded. Even if you see these mistakes for what they are, they can take on an oversized role in your identity. Are your failures really defining events for who you are?
God’s mercy and forgiveness are so much larger than you shame. When you have confessed your sins, you can take comfort in God’s lover covering anything that would have weighed you down in the past.
Prayer: Father, help me to accept Your mercy and forgiveness as I let go of shame.
