Is God partial?

It seems that many are eager to teach us all about how a sovereign and omniscient God cannot but be partial. Limited atonement. Unconditional election.

In this thread we will be looking specifically at scripture that shows us that God chooses to be impartial in His dealings with us.

We know from Paul in Rom 9:21 that He can indeed be partial. Who are we to tell God what he can and cannot do. But the rest of scripture outside of Rom 9:21 tells us clearly, what God does in fact decide to do with all His 'omniscience and sovereignty'. He chooses to be as good as He is great. He chooses to be impartial!

Partiality = unfair bias in favour of a person; favouritism.

1. Acts 10:34-35
“Then Peter replied, ‘I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism, but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.’”

God doesn’t favor by nationality or outward status. He accepts people based on their heart (fear of God) and conduct (doing what is right).

2. Romans 2:11 “For God does not show favoritism.”

A straightforward statement: God does not have respect of persons.

3. Galatians 2:6 “God does not show favoritism”

Even among religious or influential people, God treats all without favoritism.

4. Deuteronomy 10:17 “For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God, showing no partiality and accepting no bribe.”

Emphasizes His justice, that He cannot be bribed, and is above external status.

5. 2 Chronicles 19:7 “And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”

Again reinforcing that God judges fairly, not swayed by wealth, position, gifts, etc.

6. Job 34:19 “who is not partial to princes and does not favor the rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.”

God does not give special treatment just because someone is powerful or rich.

7. Colossians 3:25 “Whoever does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.”

Emphasizes that wrongdoing will be judged, regardless of who the person is.

8. James 2:1 “My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism.”

Tells believers not to act with partiality; shows that God expects impartiality among His people, reflecting His own character.

9. James 2:9 “But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”

Reinforces that favoritism is contrary to God’s law and ethics.

10. 1 Peter 1:17 “Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners.”

God will judge everyone fairly based on their deeds.

11. Matthew 22:16 / Luke 20:21 (They said to Jesus) “Teacher … You show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.”

Others observe that Jesus does not show favoritism in His teaching.

12. Ephesians 6:9 “Masters, do the same for your slaves. Give up your use of threats, because you know that He who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with Him.”

Tells earthly masters that if God treats all impartially, they should likewise treat those under them fairly.
