And being assembled together with [them], He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," [He said], "you have heard from Me; "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." Acts 1:4-5 NKJV
Has there ever been a time when you felt God compelling you to wait? How about a time when a trusted spiritual leader suggested waiting? Waiting is a big task for those inclined toward action. There aren’t awards or respected positions for people who wait the best. But what if the most important part of your ministry to others is your ability to wait?
The big caveat is whether you are waiting for the right reason—such as waiting for God’s Spirit. Rather than rushing forward with your own plans and relying on your own abilities, you wait for God’s Spirit to empower and direct you, just as the apostles did. Can you imagine how different the book of Acts would be if the apostles had moved forward on their own without waiting for God’s Spirit?
Waiting takes the pressure off you to bear the burdens of others with your own strength, or to serve others with your own wisdom. By waiting for the Spirit, you can acknowledge your dependence on God and ensure that you serve others out of God’s abundance.
Prayer: Spirit, teach me to wait for You as I serve others.
