I engaged a christian brother in an arguement when he said you can move the hand of God forcefully by engaging in fasting and prayer. My arguement is this, in as much as I tend to agree partially with him, I dissagree completely that you can force the hand of God simply as a result of Fasting. HE SAID HE'S GOING TO HAVE MERCY ON THOSE HE CHOSE TO HAVE MERCY ON AND COMPASSION ON THOSE HE WISH. so what's the place of fasting when God as merciful as He is, is willing that you pass through hardship for a period of time to toughen you or prepare you towards an assignment which is on a larger proportion. I stand to be corrected pls. God Bless You all.

I agree with you.

My step-father was an itinerate minister, and both he and my mother often fasted when they wanted to known the Lord's will prior to making an important decision, or when illness or some other calamity had befallen the family. They felt that fasting brought one closer to God on a spiritual level, as abstaining from food (and sometimes drink) reminded one of the Lord's sacrafice for us, and while it deprived the flesh of worldly comforts it fed the spirit man (Bible study and prayer were also a large part of their fasts). But I do not believe they ever believed that fasting forced God to do anything.

The Lord is sovereign and He alone will decide when and in what manner He intercedes on our behalf. Nothing that we can do will force Him to act more or less swiftly than He intends to. To believe otherwise, I feel is arrogant presumption.

My goodness, that was a wonderful write up. Thanks Chad. It answers all my questions about fasting and prayer.

Our prayers are only answered through faith ... believing ...
Perhaps fasting is a discipline for the flesh, which helps us
direct our attention more on the spirit and the spiritual side of life.

It was once spoken to me that everything we really need we have. Everything we really want we will receive. Everything we desire will be answered. Because God is closer than our breath. He IS our breath.

just a few thoughts ...

I love this site!

In reality, the considered 'fasting chapter' is Isaiah 58. It gives you the rundown of the results of fasting. Yes it clears our hearing so we can distinguish between flesh & faith, but to move the hand of God on our behalf, is once again generalized in Mark 11:24-25. Two factors:

1.)Faith - When you pray, believe
2.)Forgiveness - When you stand praying, forgive

Also, check out the second half of the formula for fulfilled promises found in Hebrews 6:12-15. Nobody knows the time God releases the promises on our lives. The only thing that comes quickly when you accept it, is salvation. All other things the Lord chooses to use time as a strength builder for our faith. This is the Cliff notes, alongside the excellent write-up Dr. Chad put together. I love this site.:shade:
